News: Herta, Andretti Deny Rumor

After the rumors sprouted up two days ago that Marco Andretti would be dropped from the Andretti Autosport IndyCar program in favor of their potential new IMSA team, both Andretti and race strategist and friend Bryan Herta have publicly made a response.

During the first practice session of the race weekend, IndyCar Radio interviewed Andretti about the rumor. Andretti said, "That's just the journalists doing as bad of a job as I'm doing on the track. I'm not going anywhere."

Later, Herta responded as well, saying, "I'm already committed to work with Marco Andretti next year, so if he's going to sports car racing, then I am too, I guess."

Herta joined the Andretti team after the 2015 IndyCar Season and was the race strategist for the 100th Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi. He would switch to Marco's team in the 2016-17 offseason.

Marco, a twelve year veteran of the IndyCar Series, has spent all with his father's team, Andretti Autosport. In those twelve years, he's only collected two wins and has failed to make a meaningful run at a championship.

This season, Marco has struggled immensely, as has the team at a handful of races. Of his four teammates, Andretti is last in the points standings. Multiple mechanical failures, poor drives, and other unfortunate circumstances has made Andretti a non-factor at each weekend.

The rumor of his demise was first tweeted about by Tony Donohue of 1070 The Fan. I reached out to him for a comment but he declined.

Team owner Michael Andretti has yet to comment on the situation.

My Opinion

It makes perfect sense by Marco Andretti would be dropped with someone who has a future in the series and maybe a run at the championship, but I will say that it is nice to see Marco's passion for IndyCar come out of the woodwork. Him adamantly denying the rumors and saying that IndyCar is where his life is was quietly reassuring for me. Marco is often knocked for lacking non-verbal body language that makes him look like he doesn't give a damn about the series.
