On this day seventeen years ago, May 12th, Arie Luyendyk set the four lap record at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a combined speed of 236.986 mph and the single lap record of 237.498 mph. Despite achieving this colassal speed, Arie did not start on pole because this speed was set during the second day of Time Trials right after Pole Day. Arie was driving for Jonathan Byrd / Treadway Racing during the month of May. Despite the fast pace, Arie finished P16 in the race due to an incident Nevertheless, this moment is one of the all time historic moments in IMS history, the last track record, and it looks like it will not be beaten for a long time.
