Pre-Season Power Rankings: Teams

Here are the pre-season power rankings for the teams of the 2012 Indycar season (and this was very hard, there are a lot of good teams):

The team to beat in 2012. The Death Star is in formation

1. Penske Racing
They have been very strong all through testing. Expect big things from them all season.

2. Andretti Autosport
Also have been strong in testing. Out with Danica and in with Hinchcliffe. I'd call that a fair trade, and by fair, I mean they have a much better chance of winning with Hinch.

3. Chip Ganassi Racing
They have been fast in testing, can they make it five straight championships? Only reason they aren't higher is because of reliability issues with Honda.

4. KV Racing
They got these two drivers that nobody has ever heard of driving with them, and also a driver looking to have a breakout season.

5. Panther Racing
The American with a big pair of stones can guide this team to the top tier form they once had in Indycar.

6. Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing
How will the team do in their first full time season with the extremely talented Josef Newgarden?

7. Bryan Herta Autosport
First full time season for BHA. If they perform as well as they tweet, then they will be winners.

8. Dreyer and Reinbold Racing
Moving from two full time cars to one may be a blessing in disguise. All focus goes onto Oriol Servia who can do some damage and has the potential to wins races.

9. Dale Coyne Racing
Adding Justin Wilson is a huge up for this team. I'd love to see the small team win a couple races.

10. HVM Racing
No more porkchop, the car or the Twitter account. I bet Simona isn't too sad about not driving in Porkchop anymore. She is going to have herself a good season.

11. Schmidt Hamilton Motorsports
Alex Tagliani is gone. Simon Pagenaud is in. Simon gives the team a lot of options. If he can work it on ovals, they could be a dark horse team.

12. Ed Carpenter Racing
Greatly staffed, but I am not convinced that Ed has not improved his poor performances on road courses.

13. AJ Foyt Enterprises
Can Mike Conway bounce back from a very poor season at the elite Andretti Autosport?

14. Rahal Letterman Racing
Time to shake off the rust. But they picked the most inconsistent driver in Takuma Sato. He can win races, if he could just finish.

15. Dragon Racing
Well we all are aware of the financial troubles and outstanding bills that Jay Penske has put his team is now in. How will their race performance be?

16. Michael Shank Racing
It's hard to win without an engine.

17. Conquest Racing
At least Shank has a driver lined up...

Thanks for reading! And please tell me what you think.

  1. Personally, I've got Conway and Foyt much higher. Conway can win, and Foyt's team has upgraded their engineering situation greatly. I'm not saying they'll be at the top, but they could surprise some folks. I also think Coyne could have a very good year with Wilson and Pappas back together.

Man, it's great to have so much IndyCar discussion out there! St. Pete can't get here soon enough!
